Community Action Month Event Highlights from Community Action Partnership of Lake County
COMMUNITY ACTION MONTH 2023 WAS A BIG SUCCESS!!!
Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPOLC) hosted four (4) awesome events in May! We kicked off the month with the 14th Annual Anti-Poverty 5K Walk on May 6th. We had over 150 walkers join us, including a great turn out by AMO Athletics! Our CEO, Mary Lockhart White, Congressman Brad Schneider, State Representative Rita Mayfield, the City of Waukegan Mayor Ann Taylor and our CA Month Presenting Sponsor Wintrust representative Sara Staniszewski opened the rally. We had several walkers from our event sponsors from Walgreens, Mutual of America Financial Group, Waukegan Township, Lake County, Illinois, NAACP Lake County, North Shore Gas, The African American Museum at the England Manor, Employee Connections and other community residents!
Next, we hosted our annual Report to the Community and Partner Recognition Reception on May 11th. Our Reception guests enjoyed a variety of hors d'oeuvre and wine as they networked with other guests. We honored Al and Toni Buford, Gloria Moore/Glo’More Beauty Academy, Nicor Gas and NSTS Charity Foundation for the work they do in the community and for their ongoing support of CAPOLC. This fundraiser helped us raise funds to continue the Hot Meals Delivery Program for Seniors in 2023.
Our third event, the Health, Wealth and Resource Fair on May 19th gave CAPOLC an opportunity to partner with local agencies and small businesses to provide resources to our community.
Our final event was the Poverty Simulation on May 23rd. A special thank you to The Alliance for Human Services for facilitating this event. Many of the participants expressed how they learned a lot and were deeply moved by the experience. Participants gathered to debrief after the simulation. Important self-reflection included questions such as, "will this experience impact how I think about poverty in our communities?". The consensus was that the Poverty Simulation experience is well worth continuing throughout the year
“Since 2020, our Hot Meals Delivery Program has cooked and delivered 61,375 hot meals to those housed and/or incubated in hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program was supported through County and private grants. In 2022, we provided an average of 150 hot meals per weekday to 4 Senior Residences (Zion and North Chicago). The program provided one hot meal per weekday that includes healthy food choices to seniors who have demonstrated barriers of (1) cost for fresh produce and fruit; and (2) access to transportation to places that sell fresh produce and fruits,” said Lockhart White. "The 2023 Community Action Month fundraising efforts where dedicated to support the continuation of the Hot Meals Delivery Program for Seniors. We are beyond words with gratitude for the generous contributions received.”
“We are so thankful to our presenting sponsor Wintrust; supporting sponsors Assurance, City of Waukegan and Waukegan Township; and our partner table sponsors Federal Supply USA, Integrity Developers Inc. and Mutual of America and other sponsors for their generosity. The financial support during Community Action Month has enabled us to continue the hot meals program in 2023 and it is making a huge impact on our mission. We can’t thank them enough for believing in us, supporting us and investing in our cause!” Mary Lockhart White Executive Director/ CEO
